The Napoleonic War

A lively and memorable historical experience

Ligny’s famous "Napoleonic War Re-Enactments" started back in 1965, at the initiative of a number of enthusiasts who were keen to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Ligny on 16 June 1815.

Constantly evolving since the event got under way, it has amplified in scope whilst retaining its authenticity and historical purview. In 2015, the bicentenary celebrations only emboldened our spirits and allowed us to really put the ‘Ligny 1815’ brand on the map.

With the support of local associations, the Tourist Office and the Ligny 1815 Museum, these event days are now a benchmark for remembrance tourism in Europe.

In early June of each year, two days of non-stop entertainment takes visitors back to the world of the villagers and soldiers at the end of the Napoleonic Wars 200 years ago.

In the heart of the historic village, visitors get to discover old trades, join in with activities, watch shows and savour culinary specialities. Meanwhile, at the encampment, as the troops prepare for the decisive show-down, you get to witness the life of the troops in the field up close and personal.

These historical re-enactments make for a timeless experience, especially for young people, who get to learn about the way things were done in days gone by.
